Travertine is technically a Limestone, an interesting sedimentary rock made of at least 50% calcium carbonate in the form of calcite. Travertine is a chemical sedimentary rock because it is formed from calcium carbonate precipitation, like you would find in a cave. Water drips into the cave from fresh or marine sources, it then evaporates leaving the calcium carbonate to build up over time. Travertine can be filled for a more polished look or left open for a natural looking floor. Because it is made mostly of calcium carbonate and will hold a polish it is often called a marble
